Locally grown

Locally Grown is a project to boost enterprise in deprived areas and social housing. Focusing on West and South Yorkshire it offers a package of free support to help people set up their own businesses, develop social enterprises and encourage small businesses growth.

Locally Grown is a partnership between Yorkshire Housing, Accent Foundation, Connect Housing, In-Communities, Places for People, and Participate Projects. It is being funded with the help of a £1.5 million grant from the European Regional Development Fund which is being match funded by the project partners. It aims to create 102 new businesses and 138 new jobs across West and South Yorkshire.

Our role

As part of the Locally Grown project, Participate are the specialist support service for social venture support. We provide one-to-one support for people and organisations who are set up specifically with a social focus.

Participate also offers a business brokerage service to Locally Grown clients by arranging support from private sector companies to assist them in setting up or running their businesses. This will support will take the form of advice and training, mentoring, pro-bono work, volunteering and, where relevant, donations of materials and skills.

The programme has been running for two years, in that time we have achieved the following:

  • 96 social ventures engaged
  • 905 business volunteers contributed a day of their time for free to locally grown clients
  • £287, 266 raised for Locally grown clients through private sector donations and fundraising
